We have a weak spot for old backpacks and to be honest you should too! They have this old world ruggedness to them that is simply great. Made out of thick duck canvas material, adorned with leathers straps, pockets and loop and of course the beaten in look that only time and extensive use can acquire. Most of the modern backpacks are lightweight have zippers in strange places, nylon, velcro and intense colors that scream for attention. In vintage backpacks the usefulness of the pack is the leading design choice without wasting valuable material on unneeded extra's. This gives them a timeless utilitarian quality and it is the reason they are still as good today as they were over half a century ago.
This is another great example of the vintage backpack by which all others are defined so to say. It is the original and righly quite famous Swiss Army backpack also known as the 'salt and pepper' backpack. This references the color of the almost indestructible hemp and canvas mix fabric of which this pack is made. The backpack is incredibly strong but still very comfortable to carry, even with a heavy load. There were quite a few different version of this pack and this is the one we see the most. This does not mean at all that they are common any more... They are actually really hard to find nowadays especially in this great condition.
