It is without any question that military garments have had a huge impact on fashion ever since WW2. It is also not far from the thruth to say that this garment might be one the most easily recognizable garment to proof that statement.
The Duffle Coat has a rich history with the name sometimes falsely being attributed to the Belgian town of Duffle where indeed a coarse wool fabric was made. A very similar coat with a different shape but with the distinctive wooden toggles was first made in the late 19th century in the UK. This garment however was strongly influenced by a Polish model which also used the wooden toggles.
To cut a long story short: the Royal Navy needed a hard wearing, warm coat for its overseas endeauvours. Please enter: the Duffle Coat. Mainly during the 1950s and 1960s the Duffle Coat saw wide civilian use and untill today it can be seen on the streets in various shapes and sizes.
This item is the real deal. Eventhough the label is washed out it does tell us it is genuine Navy issued. Most likely not Second World war as we have also had one of those and the label was bigger and placed higher and on the other side. The previous owner has tweaked the jacket here and there but not taking away anything from its look and feel.
